According to the French National Transport Federation (FNTR), the recent cold weather and snow have caused major problems for retailers due to the difficulties they have posed to deliveries.
Retail giant Carrefour has complained of delays to deliveries to around twenty of its stores in France, according to France 24.
Last week, hundreds of trucks were stuck in the Lower Normandy region of the country, while at the weekend, more than 500 trucks found themselves stranded at the French-German border.
The cold weather’s impact on agriculture is harder to quantify, but early indications are that the north of the country has suffered the most.
Daniel Bouquillon, a chicory producer and board member for the national federation of vegetable producers (FNPL), explained the cold’s impact to France 24.
“The harvest has been very difficult to manager due to the cold,” he said. “Even though we saw it coming this time, we have still lost both time and money. Some producers have been unable to do enough to protect their production, and the frost has destroyed everything.”
