Andrés Góngora Belmonte has been re-elected as national head of Spanish fruit and vegetable producer association Coag for the next four years.
Almeria-based producer Gongora will be joined on the group's board by Francisco Gil of Coag Murcia, who will be responsible for citrus; Catalan producer David Borda, responsible for deciduous fruit; and Aragon-based Bernardo Funes, who will continue to head up the dried fruit and nuts sub-sector.
Following the election, Coag said it planned to focus as a priority on the reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy and on government measures to improve the functioning of the food chain.
Commenting on the group's plans for the coming four years, Gongora said it was essential to establish immediately measures that would improve the profitability of the Spanish horticultural sector.
'It must be a flexible mechanism, universal and accessible to all producers, with 100 per cent public funding, and it must be activated automatically and immediately,' he said. 'Imports from third countries must also be limited.'
