French shipping group CMA CGM has revealed that it is following 'with great concern' the events currently taking place in Egypt, where political protests have continued for ten days.
Reacting to the ongoing unrest, CMA CGM has set up an emergency and communication response team to follow the situation around the clock, keeping in close contact with its Egyptian teams in the country to assess their safety and ensure operations are 'fully maintained'.
'CMA CGM Group, which has been present for many years in Egypt, remains mobilised to ensure continuity of its operations and services to its customers,' the group said in a statement.
The shipper continues to accept bookings for Egypt and the its vessels are maintaining calls to the country's main terminals, Damietta, Alexandria and Port Said East and West, while vessels continue to transit normally through the Suez canal.
Despite limited access, CMA CGM said that all offices remained open, except at Ein Sokhna, and that the resumption of telecommunications in Egypt has allowed it to contact all of its customers in the country.
CMA CGM in Egypt is represented by:
- Five offices (Port Said, Cairo, Alexandria, Ein Sokhna, Damietta)
- 272 employees including two expatriates
- 16 services crossing the Suez Canal weekly
- Seven services calling at Egypt weekly
- Two feeders serving the region
