An annual report released by the Italian Ministry of Health has underlined the safety of the country's fresh fruit and vegetable production, according to export association Fruit Imprese.

The report, entitled 'Official phytosanitary product residue check on foods of vegetal origin', confirmed that 99 per cent of tests hqd returned normal results that were within Italian food safety standards.

'This brilliant result is reward for the efforts of companies in the sector, who have been for some time have been involved in reducing the impact of residues in order to safeguard the environment and consumers,' said a spokesperson for Fruit Imprese.

The report highlighted an overall downturn in consignments exceeding normal limits during the past year, as well as a higher overall proportion of Italian fresh produce – around two-thirds – which was entirely free of pesticide residues.

'This is a clear demonstration of the constant efforts of the supply chain to guarantee ever better and safer products,' the spokesperson added.
