Port of Gulfport

The recently restored Port of Gulfport in Mississippi has welcomed US multinational Chiquita back to its original docking berth, four years after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

The return of the company, a major banana importer, to the berth it occupied prior to the August 2005 storm marks a milestone for the Port, which has undergone a US$51m rebuilding project at the west pier, where two docking berths have been fully restored and reopened.

“We want to make sure our tenants have the facilities they need to sustain and grow their operations; the reconstruction of berths 1, 2 and 3 shows our commitment to current tenants and potential clients” said John Rester, Mississippi State Port Authority (MSPA) president of the board of commissioners.

The first post-Katrina shipment of fruit arrived on the 2 September at the west pier.

'This is a major milestone in the reconstruction process,' added Don Allee, chief executive of the MSPA.
