One of the founding members of Unica Group looks back on 30 years of growth
Spanish cooperative Casur celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. As one of the founding members of Almería’s Unica Group, Casur plays a leading role in the region’s supply of produce for the European market.
Founded in 1994 with 12 grower members, the cooperative has been on a steady growth trajectory in subsequent years. In 2019 it merged with the Parquenat cooperative to form Natursur and today it handles a volume of 60,000 tonnes a year.
Initially, Casur offered a small range of organic products, but it has since become one of Unica’s main producers of organic produce. Currently, the cooperative has around 330 members, farming over some 600ha.
Both Casur and Parquenat were already part of Unica before the merger and shared many similarities. The merger helped them improve their member’s profitability through greater efficiencies, allowing Casur’s Viator packhouse to specialise in organic produce and Parquenat’s Níjar facility to focus on conventional produce.
