Carrefour expects to sell more than 25,000 tonnes of melons and watermelons this summer through its fresh produce distribution arm Socomo, a volume that is said to be enough to cover 70 football pitches.
Socomo sold an estimated 40,877 tonnes of melons and watermelons last year, of which 25,000 tonnes were distributed among Carrefour’s Spanish retail operations, while some 16,000 tonnes were exported, reports El Dia.
According to the company, the produce was exported to the United Arab Emirates, as well as a number of European countries, including the UK, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Romania, France and Belgium.
Socomo worked with more than 500 Spanish fresh produce companies last year and said 85 per cent of the produce it marketed was sourced from within the country. The Carrefour subsidiary sold 503,487 tonnes of fresh produce last year worth an estimated €557m.
