The Port of Hamburg has reported on strong growth of 8 per cent in seaborne cargo through the first nine months of 2010, with volumes totalling 89.4m tonnes for the January-September period.
The container segment in particular performed well, with double-digit growth of 10.7 per cent meaning a total of 5.9m TEUs handled.
Imports came in came in at 51.8m tonnes, an increase of 11.8 per cent, Port of Hamburg Marketing reported, while exports also grew, by 3.3 per cent to 37.6m tonnes.
General cargo showed market growth of 8.6 per cent to 60.2m tonnes handled, while bulk cargo jumped 6.9 per cent to 29.2m tonnes.
'The cargo-handling figures for the first three quarters of 2010 indicate that the strongly performing container segment in particular recorded double-digit growth on almost every trade route,' said Claudia Roller, CEO of Port of Hamburg marketing.
For the full-year of 2010, Ms Roller said that she expected an increase in container trade of more than 11 per cent, up to nearly 8m TEU at the port. Total seaborne cargo volumes are set to reach more than 120m tonnes, representing growth of between 8-9 per cent.
