Asprocan, the Canary Islands’ association of producer organisations, has said that its ‘European Taste’ campaign, which began in October 2007, had resulted in a substantial uplift in European sales thanks to prominent television and magazine promotions.
In a statement released this week, the group said that banana exports to the Iberian peninsula during June had risen by 26.43 per cent, reaching more than 28,920 tonnes, compared with exports totalling 22,874 tonnes during the same period a year before.
Overall, the association said there had been a 3.90 per cent increase in exports to the peninsula during the first 26 weeks of 2008 compared with the same period of 2007, which totalled over 200,178 tonnes of bananas.
Asprocan said it was not only concentrating its promotions on Spain, but also on Portugal and Germany. The ‘European Taste’ campaign is scheduled to continue until 2010.
