Canaries banana producers have launched a competition offering Spanish shoppers the chance to win a trip to Lapland as part of promotional campaign designed to encourage greater consumption of the fruit during the festive period.
Canary Islands banana association Asprocan said it had conceived the campaign as a means of combating the expected downturn in sales that typically takes place during the Christmas holidays in Spain.
In a statement, the organisation said the centrepiece of the promotion was a prize draw, due to be decided on 22 December, which will offer a family of four – two adults and two children – the chance to visit Lapland.
However, the competition only forms part of a campaign, which will run the whole of December, that includes product tastings in major supermarket outlets, leaflets being handed out in 7,800 greengrocers and wholesalers, promotional postcards being sent to 20,000 homes and 150,000 SMS and email messages.
