Canada’s fresh fruit imports from Chile rose by 20.6 per cent last season (2010/11) according to figures from the Chilean Fresh Fruit Exporters Association (Asoex) and reported by SimFRUIT.

The total volume shipped to Canada reached 47,123 tonnes in 2010/11, compared with 39,063 tonnes during the previous campaign.

Among the main fruits imported were table grapes and apples, while cherry arrivals alone rose by an impressive 137.2 per cent to 18,749 tonnes, Asoex said.

Despite being one of the biggest fruit import items, exports of apples to Canada actually fell by 3.9 per cent to 17,549 tonnes, compared with 18,279 tonnes in 2009/10.

Sendings of kiwifruit, oranges and clementines also fell by 10 per cent (to 2,641 tonnes), 8.1 per cent (3,388 tonnes) and 51.9 per cent (824 tonnes) respectively, according to Asoex.
