The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have jointly announced that an oriental fruit fly outbreak in Lakewood, near Los Angeles, has been eliminated.

Following the eradication of the infestation, California is now free from oriental fruit fly, according to the USDA and the CDFA.

After the discovery of the outbreak last year, a 75 square-mile quarantine zone was put in place to prevent the spreading of the pest, before eradication treatments were used to eliminate it completely.

'The oriental fruit fly is a pest that poses a serious threat to California farming and backyard gardens,' CDFA secretaryAG Kawamura told the Central Valley Business Times.
