Unica Group has named Diego Calderón as its new deputy director. Calderón has worked at the company since 2015 as director of business development and innovation.
Prior to joining the cooperative he held positions at Geest-Bakkavor, Morgan Stanley and agri-food marketing specialist B-Ideas.
With sales of €335m in 2016/17, Unica is one of Spain’s biggest fresh produce exporters, bringing together 12 cooperatives in the south of the country.
Around 80 per cent of the 240,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables it produces every year are exported, mainly to the European Union and, to a lesser extent, North America and Asia.
Since its creation in 2009, the company has been growing at an annual rate of around 20 per cent, a trend that it expects to maintain this year through organic growth and the incorporation of new companies.
The group’s production spans 2,300ha of greenhouses and 1,500ha of outdoor cultivation in Almería, Cádiz, Granada and Murcia.
