Brittany-based marketer Prince de Bretagne has announced the coming of the first Gariguette strawberries of the season.
The Gariguette is an early spring strawberry grown in Brittany from February until the summer, arriving along with two other varieties, the Mara des Bois and the Magnum.
However, the Gariguette accounts for more than half of annual production, made popular by its subtle sweet-tart taste, rich vermillion colour and elongated shape.
21 Prince de Bretagne producers cultivate the Gariguette, between Finistère and Côtes d’Armor, with production peaking in mid-April.
The latest innovation from Prince de Bretagne has been in the packaging of its Gariguette strawberries, with growing demand for larger pack sizes encouraging the marketer to offer 1kg, 1.8kg and 2kg packs to meet the needs of families and weekly shoppers.
This year, producers are equally launching an open carton of 250g with handles, targeted at the gourmet end of the market.
