Brazilian Hass avocado producers are celebrating the opening of new strategic markets in 2024 as global consumer demand for the green fruit continues to grow. Japan, Chile, Costa Rica and India all gave the green light to Brazilian avocado exports last year.

Brazilian fruit association Abrafrutas, together with Abacates do Brasil (Avocados of Brazil) and the Association of Engineers and Architects of Bauru (Assenag), held a workshop for producers in São Paulo last week to discuss the logistical challenges and commercial opportunities in these new destinations.

The event featured panels on market characteristics, business environment and work plan for access to the Japanese and Chilean markets, with the participation of experts such as the president of the Brazilian Avocado Association (AAB), Adilson Luís, with the head of the special export programmes division of the Agriculture Ministry, Caio César Simão, with the executive director of Fermac Cargo, Alexandre Duarte, and the technical assistant of Abrafrutas, Victor Mendes.

Brazil exported more than 24,000 tonnes of avocados worth US$36mn in 2024.

Mendes commented: “These market openings represent a huge step forward for the sector, especially for producers who have been investing in quality and traceability. Now, the challenge is to ensure that the entire chain is prepared to meet the demands of these countries”.

Other notable market openings include Argentina in 2019 and Bolivia in 2020. Abrafrutas has been a key player in this process, working with the Ministry of Agriculture and international partners to facilitate negotiations, promote training and monitor the development of phytosanitary protocols. The organisation believes market diversification is essential to ensure stability for producers and sustainable growth for the sector.
