The Brazilian Tahiti lime industry is anticipating a positive season production-wise this year, according to a forecast from Cepea-Esalq, a research centre linked to the University of São Paulo in Brazil, and reported by Hortifruti Brasil.
Output is expected to be “good” since most groves registered good blossoming and are full of fruit, Cepea-Esalq said.
Production volume may be similar to 2012, with the season peak set to occur from mid-January onwards.
Following abundant rainfall in December, Cepea-Esalq said there may also be an increase in fruit sizes.
However, Cepea-Esalq pointed out that output at the beginning of this year may be lower because part of the production was harvested in advance.
Despite the below-expected size, producers harvested part of the crop in December, encouraged by high prices.
Europe is the most important market for Brazilian limes, especially Germany and the UK.
