Blueberries and avocados spearheaded Peru’s agricultural export growth between January and October of this year.

Blueberry shipments totalled US$1.64bn, an increase of 50.7 per cent on the year-earlier period, while avocado exports reached US$1.23bn up 29 per cent on the first ten months of 2023, according to the Association of Exporters of Peru (Adex).

The figures were released during the announcement of a new cooperation agreement between Adex and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) to consolidate export growth and promoting the sustainable development of Peru’s agricultural sector.

“The agreement focuses on the technical training, the promotion of exports and the sustainability of the agricultural sector, to empower small and medium-sized farmers and include them in the chain through innovative strategies, association and advanced technology,” said Adex president Julio Pérez.

Pérez noted that “this alliance reinforces the collaboration between the public and private sectors, key to moving towards inclusive and competitive growth”.

The US remains Peru’s biggest agricultural export market, taking 33.3 per cent of total shipments with a value of US$3.024bn, an increase of 21.9 per cent on the year-earlier period.

This was followed by the Netherlands (US$1.377bn), Spain (US$675mn), Chile (US$374mn) and Ecuador (US$320mn).

Peruvian agricultural products reached markets as diverse as French Polynesia, Guinea-Bissau, Moldova, Angola, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Tanzania, Luxembourg, the Cayman Islands and Nepal.
