Belize's citrus industry has suffered losses of an estimated US$16.5m, following the devastating impact of Hurricane Earl.

According to industry stakeholders and reported by 7 News, losses stand at 569,444 boxes of oranges and 133,585 boxes of grapefruit.

The damage has prompted the industry to request financial assistance from the Belize government, particularly to fertilise groves that lost leaves due to the strong winds.

The banana industry has also requested government assistance in the wake of the hurricane, Breaking Belize News reported.

Hurricane Earl caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage across Belize and Mexico, and was the cause of 67 deaths in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, with 12 people still missing.
