Battaglio Rome centre warehouse

Italian importer Battaglio has confirmed plans to establish a major new fresh fruit and vegetable distribution centre in Rome.

Construction work on the new 5,000m2 warehouse facility is due to begin shortly and should be finished in time for its planned opening in the first half of 2014.

According to group president Luca Battaglio, the desire to build a new fresh produce facility in the Italian capital has been driven by demand from customers in various parts of the country for faster supply times.

"The project started with a view to satisfy more efficiently and quickly customers from central and southern Italy," he told Eurofruit. "Logistics will be inevitably much more streamlined."

The warehouse will be located at the entrance of Centro Agroalimentare Roma, the Eternal City's main fruit and vegetable wholesale market and a key strategic hub for fresh produce logistics.

Situated on a plot covering 12,000m2, the building itself will contain fully refrigerated warehouse space, storage and ripening rooms, a processing room and a large area for packaging, as well as administrative offices.
