Banana producers’ representatives in the Dominican Republic were due to meet this week to draw up a plan to battle black sigatoka, which is destroying their crops.
They were to hold talks with their minister of agriculture, the regional plant health authority OIRSA and researchers from as far afield as France’s Cirad organisation.
Funding bodies including USAid were also due to attend.
Up to 40 per cent of plantations in the country’s north west are affected.
