Colombian banana group Banacol’s charitable foundation Corbanacol has signed a pack with the Costa Rican government to provide help and support to families living in extreme poverty in Costa Rica.
The agreement, called ‘Zero extreme poverty’, will see Banacol fund programmes through Costa Rica’s Mixed Institute for Social Assistance (IMAS) to aid families of Banacol employees that live in vulnerable social conditions.
IMAS is a public-private initiative that seeks to provide support to families identified as living in conditions of extreme poverty.
Fernando Marín, executive president of IMAS and Costa Rican Minister of Social Welfare, said: “This is a joint effort that is not only focused on financial subsidies, but will make alliances with other sectors to support scholarships, housing and other matters.”
In a statement, Banacol said: “This agreement, which will bring great benefits for company employees and their families, was led by Banacol and Corbanacol, thanks to our foundation's vast experience in projects and public-private alliances, developed in Colombia.”
