French retailer Auchan is giving up its Indian operation and ending its partnership with the Indian division of Dubai’s Landmark Group, which has been in place for nearly two years, reports Planet Retail.
The 13 Auchan stores are likely to be rebranded back to Max hypermarkets by January 2015, the report said.
Auchan’s exit follows India’s recent election of the nationalist-leaning Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which seems to have dashed international retailer hopes of obtaining clarity regarding FDI in multi-brand retail, Planet Retail said.
But the report said Auchan may re-enter the Indian market directly at a later stage.
