Horticola del Desierto, parent company of Desert Farms, is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary next month.
The company, founded by Gonzalo Viveros Arévalo and his late faterh Ezequiel Viveros Senior, was an early pioneer in the production of asparagus in the Mexicali area before transferring to Caborca in the 1990s.
Currently, Horticola owns around 1,500 ha of green asparagus, and operates in two fully certified packing facilities in Caborca Sonora. In 2013 the producer opened its own marketing company, Desert Farms, to service its customers in the US and oversee its market diversification strategy, the main focus of which is the Asian market.
Since then it has seen a steady rise in its shipments to Asia where its main market is Japan, followed by Australia and South Korea.
