Asda Trollies

New figures released by market analyst Kantar Worldpanel have revealed that Asda enjoyed strong market share growth for the 12 weeks to 18 March, while leading grocery retailer Tesco fell back slightly.

Tesco's market share fell to 30.2 per cent from 30.6 per cent in the year-earlier period, while Walmart-owned Asda's share reached a record 17.9 per cent, up 0.6 percentage points.

According to Kantar, Asda's stronger performance was driven in part by the integration of its Netto outlets.

Of the other 'big four' retailers, Sainsbury's saw its share remain stable at 16.6 per cent, as did Morrisons with a market share of 12.3 per cent.

The Cooperative's market share stood at 6.5 per cent, followed by Waitrose (4.4 per cent), Lidl (2.7 per cent) and Aldi (2.6 per cent).

The grocery retail market as a whole climbed 4 per cent on the previous year, Kantar noted.
