Shipments of pears grew 6 per cent in the first nine months of the year, while apple exports rose by 1 per cent
Exports of pears and apples from the Argentine provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén registered a slight improvement in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to plant health authority Senasa.
The figures, reported in Diario Río Negro, show that pear exports rose by 6 per cent to 302,404 tonnes. Brazil was the biggest market, taking around one-third of total shipments, followed by Russia, the US and Italy. So far this year, 53 per cent of the region’s pear production was exported, while 33 per cent went for processing and 14 per cent was sold on the domestic market.
Apple exports grew 1 per cent between January and September to 59,659 tonnes. The main destinations were the neighbouring countries of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia. Unlike pears, most of Argentina’s apples are destined for the domestic market, with 47 per cent sold as fresh, 37 per cent going for processing and just 16 per cent being exported.
Patagonia continues to be the main producing region, accounting for 90 per cent of Argentina’s apple output and 84 per cent of pear volumes.
