The 2024/25 crop is expected to weigh in at 655,000 tonnes for pears and 488,000 tonnes for apples

Argentine pear production is forecast to reach 655,000 tonnes in 2024/25, up from 624,000 tonnes in the previous campaign, according to a recent report from the US Department of Agriculture.

Williams pear

Williams accounts for 40 per cent of total production

The report said the increase is down to more favourable climatic conditions. The Williams variety continues to dominate, accounting for 40 per cent of production and exports. It is closely followed by the Packham, which represents one-third of the total, while D’Anjou has a share of 15 per cent. The Abate variety accounts for 5 per cent of production.

Pear exports are expected to reach 330,000 tonnes. “Argentina’s ability to reach its export estimates will depend on its ability to successfully maintain traditional international markets and expand the business to other Latin American countries,” the USDA said.

The 2024/25 apple crop is expected to weigh in at 488,000 tonnes, representing a slight increase on the previous campaign, again thanks to favourable climatic conditions translating into higher yields. The USDA said apple exports are expected to reach 82,000 tonnes, driven primarily by increased demand from Latin American countries.

The main apple varieties produced are Red Delicious, Granny Smith and Gala. Together, these three varieties represent almost 90 per cent of the country’s apple production.

For 2024/25, planted area is expected to reach 19,000ha for pears and 17,500ha for apples.
