AREFLH, the assembly for European fruit- and vegetable- producing regions, met last week in Brussels for its general assembly, with over 50 delegates from 22 member regions participating in the debates.

Chaired by Josep Maria Pelegri I Aixut, minister of agriculture for Catalonia,AREFLH voted in favour of maintaining an operational, legally and financially secure common market for fruit and vegetables, including a more efficient and responsive crisis prevention and management system to address issues such as the Russian embargo.

The assembly also voted for the continuation of the School Fruit Scheme programme, which looks at ways to boost consumption among young people.

AREFLH is equally seeking to strengthen the role of regional, inter-regional and transnational associations of producer organisations to reinforce the bargaining power of producers in the face of the large supermarkets.
