Italian fresh produce company Apo Conerpo has announced positive results for 2009, revealing it marketed a total of 1.15m tonnes of fruit and vegetables, up 7.8 per cent on the previous year.

Despite tough trading conditions particularly in its major export markets, which saw consumption of fruit and vegetables rise by 0.3 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively, the group managed to sell a total of 430,000 tonnes of fruit and 720,000 tonnes of vegetables.

Total group turnover for the year was down 2.3 per cent, however, at €685m, but the company reported a 4.4 per cent upturn in sales for the 12-month period.

Sales of Apo Conerpo products to the retail trade were worth €98m in 2009, while export sales reached €102m. Sales to the processing sector stood at €87m.

'Following this satisfactory result, which we were able to achieve despite the economic crisis, the Apo Conerpo group is going to develop in three directions: research, product innovation and the enhancement of our members' production,' said a spokesperson for the company.

'We aim to develop the power of our group's brands by opening new markets,' the spokesperson added.
