When it comes to trade with North America, the Port of Antwerp in Belgium leads the way with the largest share of any European port, and efforts are being made to consolidate and further extend this market share.
On 2-5 October, the Port of Antwerp sent a roadshow to Chicago, Houston and Montreal in the US and Canada to champion the advantages that it offers trading partners, such as its proximity to large European markets and its well-developed, covered storage area.
Each year some 20m tonnes of freight is carried between the US and Antwerp, while Canada ships around 4.9m tonnes, a combined total that generates 13.5 per cent of Antwerp's total shipping freight volume.
