According to the Port of Antwerp’s National Port Council, Antwerp is rapidly catching up with its direct competitors in the Hamburg-Le Havre region when it comes to container handling.
Rotterdam continues to lead the pack in tonnage terms with 26.1 per cent, but Antwerp has leapfrogged Hamburg into second place, growing by 0.8 per cent and now controlling 24.7 per cent.
In terms of TEU, Antwerp still trails its two main rivals, but was the only one to record an increase in market share in 2008, according to the port.
