There’s a new kid on the block. This spring Peru will become a major player on the booming US avocado market and the excitement is palpable. After years of wading through red tape, South America’s fastest growing fresh produce supplier is gearing up for its first complete season of non cold-treated Hass avocado supplies to the US. And it’s only set to get better. According to the Hass Avocado Board, avocado consumption in the US has the potential to double in the coming years and, when you compare the current level to that of Mexico or Chile, the US certainly has a long way to go.

By opening the door to Peru, whose availability falls at the peak of US avocado consumption in spring and summer, the market will be able to satisfy better its staggering growth in demand. With Peru’s output forecast to rise year on year, the country will bring an important new dimension to the US market. It’s widely appreciated that the US is a difficult market to crack – for any business – so Peru’s achievement is noteworthy. And, if one thing’s for sure, Peru will tackle this new business with the same proactive approach which has seen the industry go from strength to strength over the last decade.

This new protocol will effectively pave the way to another major opportunity for Peru’s impressive fresh produce trade. Having followed the country’s avocado success in Europe and knowing the dedication and forward-thinking nature of its suppliers, it’s going to be exciting to see what Peru brings to the table in the US.
