Coag forecasts 20-22 per cent increase in volume, with good calibres anticipated
Citrus production in Andalusia is expected to increase this season, despite the torrential rains that have swept through southern and eastern Spain in recent weeks. While the DANA has caused localised damage to farms – mainly in Malaga and Almeria – the latest rains have benefited the crop overall.
With harvesting of early mandarins and Navelina oranges already underway in Huelva, early estimates from the Coordinator of Agricultural and Livestock Organisations (Coag) point to a 20-22 per cent increase in volume for 2024/25, with an abundance of good sizes.
Lemon production is also projected to reach record levels despite initial forecasts being revised 22 per cent downwards, Coag said.
The region’s producers are hoping to capitalise on stronger demand for oranges and mandarins as a result of the decrease in production in Valencia caused by the storms.
