Online retail giant Amazon will open their first concept bricks and mortar store, Amazon Go, in Seattle on Monday 22 January.
The New York Times reported that the store features a complex camera surveillance system that registers when shoppers choose an item and automatically charges their account as they depart the store. This elimiates the need for check outs and allows stores to be staffed minmally.
Restocking of shelves, ID checks and customer service have all still been spared a computer replacement, to 'add to the customer experience.'
The system has been in development for some time, and Amazon won’t give away any of the finer details of how it works. The same goes for the future of the technology, which it is keeping a closesly guarded secret.
Recently, Amazon acquired the health-focused grocery chain, Whole Foods, but says that it has “no plans” to incorporate the Amazon Go technology in to the stores.
