Amazon has launched a voice-enabled scanner that enables users to create shopping lists for its AmazonFresh home delivery grocery service. The digital handheld device, dubbed the Amazon Dash, automates the task of creating a shopping list, allowing customers to “conveniently refill and restock their home’s everyday essentials, and have fun doing it”, according to company’s website.
The gadget connects to a customer’s home Wi-Fi network and works directly with their AmazonFresh account. By saying or scanning the items into their Dash, they can then view the list on their desktop or mobile device to purchase and schedule same-day delivery. It is being made available to Amazon Prime Fresh customers in Southern California, San Francisco and Seattle, who must receive an invitation before they can sign up for a free Dash.
Launched five years ago, AmazonFresh is currently available in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, but it is believed the online retailer plans to roll out its grocery delivery business to 30-40 US markets in 2014. Between them, these markets make up approximately half of the entire US population.
