Dutch port company Zeeland Seaports met with the regional government of Almeria last week to discuss the establishment of a direct service between Almeria and Vlissingen and Terneuzen.
During the meeting the company’s commercial director Leo W. Lagendijk expressed his surprise that Almerian fruit and vegetable producers are not already using sea freight to transport their products to European markets.
He said he had held meetings with representatives from the fruit and vegetable export industry and with Almeria’s port authority, to discuss the competitive advantages such a link would offer. If the meetings are successful, a service could be in place by the end of this year.
Lagendijk also announced the imminent creation of a regular maritime service to transport citrus from Huelva to the Netherlands.
