Aldi sign

German discount retail giant Aldi is aiming to make further inroads into the wider European retail market by opening 1,000 new stores next year.

Company sources told UK newspaper the Daily Mail that the worldwide slump had led to opportunities for the retailer as consumers now consider saving on shopping as one of their highest priorities.

The group is now looking to expand its current portfolio by further expanding in markets such as the UK, Switzerland, Austria, France, Benelux, Spain and Portugal.

At the end of 2009, Aldi operated 4,745 stores abroad and 4,267 outlets in Germany.
