Aldi sign

New figures from retail market analyst Kantar Worldpanel have outlined a recent surge in sales for the UK's leading discounters Aldi and Lidl, as consumers cut back in the face of rising fuel and food prices.

Data for the three months to 23 January showed that Aldi and Lidl had experienced sales growth of close to 10 per cent, double that of leading supermarket groups Tesco and Asda.

According to The Guardian, the top end of the market had also performed well, with Waitrose and Sainsbury's also enjoying sales growth.

'This shows us that not everybody is the same and that both Waitrose and Aldi can grow at the same time,' Kantar Worldpanel analyst Ed Garner told the publication. 'Some people have had a good old bash at Christmas and are now looking for ways to save money, whereas others still feel better off because their mortgage payments have gone down.'
