Adrian Barlow FPC

Adrian Barlow has announced in a statement that he will not stand for re-election as the vice-president of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) at the organisation's AGM in June, after deeming the potential commitment required to a further year as vice-president and a possible three years as president to be unworkable.

Barlow explained that the Consortium was going through 'a period of change', with new directors coming into the organisation, although he noted that president Jim Rogers had opted to stand for re-election to ensure a smooth transition between old and new directors.

'I consider the vice-president should be the president elect and that the period of vice-presidency should be used as a period of preparation for the higher office,' he explained. 'Additionally, in my opinion a president should be prepared to serve for a minimum of three terms, if re-elected annually... in my case and subject to annual elections, a further year as vice-president and three-years as president would result in a commitment until June 2016.

'I have considered the considerable demands this would entail and whilst I would have been prepared to make the necessary commitments until 2015, I feel unable to commit for a further year,' Barlow added. Therefore it would be incorrect for me to stand for re-election as vice-president at the next AGM.'

He explained that while he is to step down as a director in June, his commitment to the FPC remained 'as strong as ever', and confirmed that the decision would have no bearing on his current or future work for English Apples and Pears Ltd or any other companies.
