New group would produce 100,000 tonnes of fruit and have an annual turnover of more than €160m
Two Catalan agri-food cooperatives, ActelGrup and Fruits de Ponent, are to form a strategic alliance, under which they will merge the management of their business units for fruit, olive oil, almonds, energy management and all member services.
The new entity, which is expected to start operating during the first half of 2024, will produce more than 100,000 tonnes of fruit and have an annual turnover of more than €160m.
The cooperatives said the decision would help promote the sustainable development of both businesses in the face of growing consolidation in the agri-food sector and ongoing challenges to production caused by the climate emergency and would lead to greater efficiency and profitability for their grower members.
“In addition, this strategic alliance aims to provide a comprehensive service and seek new business opportunities, especially in areas such as energy, labour and the future recruitment of talent within the organisation,” they said in a statement.
“The cooperative principles that both entities share make this an initiative rooted in the local area and its communities.”
