International specialised reefer group 360 Quality Association has announced that it hasjoined the United NationsSave FoodInitiative, in a bid toto help make international food logistics more efficient, while alsoreducing waste in the international supply chain.
The UN food organisation FAO, under whichSave Foodis organised, estimates that globally up to 50 per centof fruits and vegetables are lost between farm and fork, with transport and distribution potentially accounting for between 5 per centand 20 per centof the loss depending on the specific region of the world.
“Food should not be wasted in a world where shortage is just around the corner; yet too often it is,' said Walter Wildoer, chairman of the 360 Quality Association.'We believe our members can help improve the food logistics chain. Extending shelf life and quality assurance is a no-brainer.
'In fact, with more than 150 Reefer ships certified for exemplary quality fromsix different operators and 16 service providers all over the world in all the right places, we think we can make a difference,' he added.'It’s a moral thing, but for us it’s also a ‘Yes, we can!’“
