New Zealand's single-desk kiwifruit marketer Zespri has welcomed news the country's government is in talks with Russia regarding a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA), having earmarked the country as one with huge growth potential.

New Zealand Trade Minister Tim Groser met with his Russian counterpart in Moscow on Monday, Radio New Zealand has reported.

'We are already seeing increased sales and profit as a result of free trade agreements with China and South East Asia,' Zespri director of corporate and grower services Carol Ward told New Zealand's National Business Review.

The company believes there are opportunities to increase demand for New Zealand kiwifruit in Russia as the economy there recovers.

Kiwifruit is New Zealand's largest horticultural export with 99.8m trays shipped last year and grower returns estimated at NZ$825.8m (US$560.3m).
