Kiwifruit close up

Kiwifruit marketer Zespri is considering contracting farmers in Vietnam to grow kiwifruit in New Zealand’s off-season.

Zespri's general manager of global supply Simon Limmer told the New Zealand Herald the company was considering paying farmers in South East Asia to grow kiwifruit.

'Vietnam is on the radar as somewhere we're investigating,' he told the newspaper.

'Asia is a huge growth market for Zespri - China in particular, but also South East Asia - and we're looking at potential environments where we can grow kiwifruit in the off-season to offset our New Zealand supply when it isn't feasible.'

The company already has growers in Korea and Japan, and licenses farmers around the world to grow the fruit.
