The Chinese premier led a delegation on a tour of apple production facilities near the city of Tianshui earlier this week
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to an apple production centre in northwest China’s Gansu Province this week turned the spotlight on one of the country’s emerging fresh produce success stories.
Gansu’s fresh apples are now shipped to more than 20 countries worldwide in southeast Asia, central Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
A recent report in China Daily revealed that the province’s fresh apple exports were worth a total of Yn190m (US$26.2m) in January to March, with more than one-third of those sales to Vietnam, which recently removed tariffs on Chinese apple imports.
And according to data provider AgTools, fresh apples from Gansu Province are exported to several different countries outside China. The leading destinations in the first half of 2024 were Vietnam, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar.
Smaller volumes were shipped to the US, South Korea, UAE, Mexico, Philippines and Singapore in that same period.
Xi was touring a local apple production base near the city of Tianshui on 11 September to learn more about the industry’s development.
