The state government of Indian’s West Bengal has announced the number of multipurpose food storage units in the state will be increased to 100.

West Bengal’s Minister of Agriculture Naren De said global warming and India’s rising population was putting pressure on the agricultural industry, and the new storage units were part of a move to make use of technology and R&D to improve the lot of the state’s industry, reported IBNS.

“Thirty-one multipurpose storages will be opened to store fruits, flowers in the districts,” detailed West Bengal Minister of Agriculture Marketing and Disaster Management Mortaza Hossain.

The number of potato storage units in West Bengal would also be increased to 421, he said, and the number of processing facilities in the state would also be increased.

India’s cold storage capacity per capita is one of the lowest in Asia, and contributes to serious post-harvest losses in the fruit and vegetable industries.
