The Dong Nai provincial Biological Development Technology Company (Donatechco) will ship 15 containers of durian to the US this season, according to the company's managing director Nguyen Phu Cuong.
Mr Cuong said the company would only ship 300 tonnes, although the US wanted Donatechco to sign a long-term deal to become its exclusive distributor, VOV news reported.
The Donatechco fruit was bred from Thailand's Mong Thon durian after an agreement between the company and Vietnamese farmers was signed a few years ago.
The firm has invested more than 30bn dong (US$1.58m) to assist 6,000 households in growing the fruit, and this investment is expected to return almost 2,000 tonnes of durian this year alone.
Last year Donatechco exported 15 tonnes of the fruit to the US, where the quality was well received.
