Maersk reassures customers that claims will be handled swiftly and efficiently if CNY window is missed
A container ship carrying 1,300 containers of Chilean cherries bound for China has broken down in the Pacific Ocean, jeopardising delivery of its cargo in time of the Chinese New Year holiday.
Maersk said its Saltoro vessel, with a capacity to carry nearly 10,000 containers, experienced a main engine failure on 13 January while sailing in the Pacific and is now located in Micronesia’s exclusive economic zone.
It said it is currently working on repairing the vessel and keeping affected clients informed and aims to resume the journey as soon as possible. However, the delay in delivering the cherries could result in economic losses for Chilean exporters.
“This situation has raised concerns in the Chilean fruit export sector, as timely delivery is essential to maintain the quality of the cherries and meet the stringent requirements of the Chinese market,” Maersk said.
