Producers and exporters in the US are on course to ship a record US$6.2bn worth of fresh fruits and vegetables to export markets next year, according to a new government forecast, up 5.1 per cent on 2009.

The jump in exports will be driven by growing demand from Canada, Japan and the European Union, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), as major global economies recover from the global economic downturn.

Total US horticultural exports for fiscal 2011 are also expected to reach record levels, up 7.5 per cent on fiscal 2010 to US$24.5bn, The Packer reported.

'You're seeing greater acceptance of the American brand in agriculture in 2010, and you'll continue to see that in 2011,' said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a conference call. 'We're going to see more and more opportunities.'
