Chinese supermarket operator Freshippo, part of Alibaba Group, has signed a new direct sourcing deal that will see it procure fresh and frozen fruit direct from two companies in Chile.

Two companies, Copefrut and Garcés Fruit, have been chosen to take part in the procurement programme, which will see their products sold in almost 400 stores across China.

They will be able to send their produce direct to Freshippo itself, instead of using intermediary receivers.

According to industry association Frutas de Chile, a delegation of executives from Freshippo recently visited four regions in the country on a fact-finding mission organised by ProChile, with support from Chilealimentos, the National Society of Agriculture, Ciruelas Chile, and Frutas de Chile.

“Freshippo’s visit to Chile is a milestone, the result of the efforts made within the framework of ChileWeek China 2023,” said ProChile general director Ignacio Fernández.

“We are excited about the diversification opportunities that this collaboration and the direct purchasing model offer us.”
