Announcement comes as Trump puts 90-day pause on most other imposed tariffs subjecting them to a baseline 10 per cent rate
US President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on the previously threatened import tariffs, subjecting most trading partners to the same baseline 10 per cent tariff rate.
The pause will exclude China, which was instead subject to another increase – this time to 125 per cent.
In a statement on the president’s social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed the rise was due to China’s “lack of respect” to world markets.
China had previously announced it would increase tariffs on US imports to 84 per cent from 10 April, up from the previous 34 per cent rate.
“The US’s practice of escalating tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake, which seriously infringes on China’s legitimate rights and interests and seriously damages the rules-based multilateral trading system,” the Chinese finance ministry said in a statement announcing the move.
The pause will also exclude tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, which according to reporting from Reuters, will remain at 25 per cent.
