South African apple exporters say they are ready to take advantage of new opportunities in Thailand after being readmitted to the country.
The announcement of came shortly before Christmas. Exporters described the news as a nice Christmas present after a decade-long struggle go be readmitted to Thailand again after South Africa lost this market due to administrative mistakes in Pretoria.
Leading exporter Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, welcomed the announcement as “fantastic news”.
“It’s fantastic that South Africa can once again export apples to Thailand after losing this market for many years. Having Thailand as a new destination in the Far East for our apples will significantly enhance our footprint,” said managing director Roelf Pienaar.
Varieties like Fuji, Joya, and Royal Gala are set to benefit from this access to the Thai market. Pienaar noted that Pink Lady apples will also in future benefit from the reopening of the market.
According to industry body Hortgro, South African apple exports have surged by 40 per cent over the past decade, primarily driven by exports to the Far East and Asia, where about 35 per cent of all shipments are directed.
As the South African industry gears up to launch a market development campaign aimed at reintroducing their apples to Thai traders and consumers, Pienaar acknowledged that, like China, it will take time to cultivate the new market.
“New Zealand apples have held a strong position in Thailand for many years, so we need to fully understand the opportunities available to maximise our success. We look forward to the challenge and to bringing Thai consumers our quality products,” he said.
